Meditation - A Path Towards A Stress-Free Life

The world is filled with millions of people and as the world is getting more technology oriented one of the major problems that we are coming across these days is true hectic life schedule. The level of hypertension and stress disorder is increasing day by day. Today, certainly meditation is considered to be one of best proven alternative therapies that can broadly classify under the mind-body medicine.

The word meditation is derived from two Latin words: "meditari" which mean to think or exercise the mind and "mederi" to heal. In Sanskrit this word has been derived from 'medha' which actually means wisdom. Moreover according to Zen, meditation is nothing but is an awareness of inner silence and as per Yoga "meditation" is a combination of three steps: pratyahara, dharana and dhyana. Leading to a state of consciousness that brings simplicity, stillness and satisfaction meditation is mental picture of the image of a chosen deity, together with mental repetition of a relevant mantra. Meditation is a safe and simple way where one can balance his or her physical, emotional, and mental states. It is simple; but can benefit everybody.

This is a science or in other words a means of transforming the mind. By engaging ourselves with a particular meditation, one learns the patterns and habits of the mind. Meditation also offers a means to cultivate new and a better positive ways of being. Nowadays more and more doctors are recommending meditation as a best alternative or a medicine to lowerblood pressure. Today, doctors are recommending meditation as a way to lower blood pressure, improve exercise performance in people with angina, help people with asthma breathe easier, relieve insomnia and generally relax the everyday stresses of life.

As per Joan Borysenko, a Ph.D and a pioneer in the field of mind and body medicine stated mediation is an activity that keeps the attention pleasantly anchored in the present moment. Meditation helps to keep us from identifying with the movies of the mind. Meditation is not a technique but a way of life and an art of life. This is one of the few forms of art that involves becoming more aware and more sensitive to what is within us. Today it acts as a mean to join together and is a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns. It is an art that can have a transformative effect and can lead to a new understanding of life.
